Here is an interesting article and key to the Inky Cap genus, Coprinus.
Once, after breaking down and sleeping in a parking lot (which was very uncomfortable with only my young daughter's jacket in the car as a blanket on a cool raining night, causing me to wake exceptionally early) I watched one small Inky Cap species go through its entire fruiting stage: popping out of the wood chip mulch to disappearing in the earliest sun - all in a matter of hours!
I have a small pile of coals from cleaning out the fire ring at one of my campsites. Twice this year (that I witnessed) there was a fruiting of a curious medium-small species with an unusual yellowish tint.
